The team members of the Islamic Bioethics Project are located in both Qatar and Washington DC. The team members work in close collaboration with each other.
Ayman Shabana
Project Director and Encyclopedia Chief Editor
Dr. Ayman Shabana is Associate Research Professor at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar (SFS-Q). Prior to joining SFS-Q, he taught at several institutions including the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Florida International University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, his MA from Leiden University in the Netherlands, and his BA from al-Azhar University in Egypt. His teaching and research interests include Islamic legal history, Islamic law and ethics, human rights, and bioethics. He is the director of the Islamic Bioethics Project, which has been supported by three consecutive grants from Qatar National Research Fund’s National Priorities Research Program. In 2012 he received the Research Excellence Award at the Qatar Annual Research Forum and during the academic year 2013-2014 he was a visiting research fellow at the Islamic Legal Studies Program at Harvard Law School.
Robert Laws
Website Developer and Technical Support
Robert Laws is a librarian at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar. He is the lead web developer for the Islamic Bioethics Project Website. He studied history at George Mason University, receiving a BA and MA in 1998 and 2001 respectively. He obtained a MLS degree from SUNY at Buffalo in 2004.
Mona El Said
Research Assistant and Translator (Arabic Resources Curator)
Mona El Said is a Research Assistant and Translator at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar. She received her B.A. in German Literature and Translation from Ain Shams University and M.Ed. in Intercultural Education from the Free University of Berlin. In addition, Mona obtains a Diploma in teaching German as a Foreign Language from the Goethe Institute and a Career Certificate in teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language from the American University in Cairo. She speaks Arabic, English, German and basic Spanish. Her roles in the Islamic Bioethics Project (IBP) focus on the growth of the IMSE collection as she takes part in the acquisition, translation and transliteration, original-cataloging, and data curating of the Arabic bio-ethical resources. She also develops special bilingual bio-ethical thesaurus and maintains the web development of the IBP website.
